Faith and Reason Reflection: Lesson Plan

This lesson invites students to reflect on the meaning and dignity revealed through scientific discoveries, while keeping scientific explanation and theological reflection distinct and complementary.

This lesson runs alongside the scientific investigation, allowing students to consider questions of meaning and responsibility that science itself does not address.

Lesson Title:

Wonderfully Made: Designed to Give Life

Grade Level:

Middle School (Grade 7–8)

Time Required:

One class period (45–60 minutes)

Materials Needed:

– Theology Slide Deck (Click Teacher Theological Connections Slide Set to the right)
– Student Worksheet: Scripture + Virtue Reflection (Click on Student Theological Connections Worksheet to the right).

– Bible (optional, for Scripture reading)
– Student journals or writing paper

Objectives:

– Reflect on the sacred dignity of human reproduction as a participation in God’s creative power
– Connect meiosis and genetic uniqueness to the theological truth of individual human dignity
– Understand male and female complementarity as part of God’s design
– Cultivate virtue through personal reflection and discussion– – Recognize that biological order and precision are prerequisites for life and growth

Lesson Flow / Sequence:

  1. Opening Prayer and Warm-Up Question (5 min)
  2.  Slide Presentation with Discussion (25 min)
  3. Scripture + Virtue Reflection Worksheet (15 min)
  4. Final Reflection and Closing Prayer (5 min)

Assessment Options:

– Student completion of the reflection worksheet
– Class discussion participation
– Short written reflection on the final prompt

Optional Extensions:

– Invite students to write a private letter to God, thanking Him for their unique creation
– Read a short excerpt from Theology of the Body for Beginners (optional)
– Discuss how responsibility and reverence apply to how we treat others’ bodies and our own
